Tatting shuttle and tatted lace

Amazing!

5 July 2026

I have wanted to learn to tat for years but have never managed to get the hang of it, so I was really pleased to find a class near enough to get to comfortably. Ann is just the most incredibly patient teacher! She first showed us the basic technique of transferring the loop and then spent ages helping each of us individually, showing and saying the same thing over and over with apparently no sign of gritted teeth at all! We did all get the hang of it in the end though and I’m now addicted to tatting. Thank you Ann for your incredible patience and perseverance.

Tatting for Beginners

Tatting is a delicate lace craft which appeared in the UK in the 1800’s. It is made using only a shuttle, ball of crochet cotton and your hands! It’s not hard to learn and there are still many books and patterns available on the internet.

This beginners workshop runs for 4 hours and teaches you –

  • How to prepare the shuttle
  • How to hold the thread
  • How to use the shuttle for the fastest work
  • How to make rings, picots and chains
  • How to join the individual elements to make beautiful lace
